Lesley-Ann Engel - Social Co-ordinator

Lesley-Ann joined Highlands House in July as the new Social Activities Coordinator in the Susman Lifestyle Centre at Highlands House. Almost four months in and she is a favourite in the Home. Our residents love her engaging personality and empathetic nature. And it shows. When asked how she is finding the job, she beamed and answered that she absolutely loves working with the elderly. Lesley-Ann's main role and function is to plan and co-ordinate the daily social activities for the residents and if one looks at our Facebook Page you will be able to see some of the activities that she has organised. She also gets involved in facilitating some of these activities such as the baking demonstrations, tea & talk and the craft group.

We asked Lesley-Ann to tell us a bit more about herself:

I am a Capetonian by birth and I live in Kuils River which is in the Northern Suburbs.  After completing Matric I went on to study BConsumer Science (clothing and textiles) at the University of Stellenbosch.  I worked in the clothing industry for about three years and then decided I wanted to embark on a new career as I have a passion for working with people.I then went on to work in the Client Services Department of various private hospitals for nearly three years. My job mainly entailed visiting patients to ensure client satisfaction and planning and co-ordinating hospital related events. During this time I also completed a short course in Public Relations. Whilst working at the hospital I was involved in a Medi-Senior programme whereby I arranged talks for the elderly and assisted in setting up the clinic for the seniors.

I interacted with elderly patients on a daily basis while doing ward rounds and I really enjoyed talking to them as they always had very interesting stories to share about their life experiences. Elderly people are filled with immense wisdom and it's a privilege for me to learn from them. What I enjoy most about my job is that no day is the same because the residents add something new every day. It's really a humbling experience to work with the residents of Highlands House; they are fun and kind hearted.

Lesley-Ann is always looking out for interesting lectures, events, and activities for the residents. If you would like to share any with her or offer to present something at the Home please email her on lifestyle@highlandshouse.co.za
