Beverley Chiat

In August of this year I began the joy-filled endeavour of volunteering at Highlands House. I am currently working towards completing a BA in Psychology and for my one module, Community Psychology, it was suggested that we join an organisation as part of an assignment and for our end of the year exam. All I can say is, thank goodness for this assignment which was the catalyst for my volunteering at such a wonderful 'home.'

On my first day I was thrown into the deep end, baking cupcakes with the lovely Lesley. They were absolutely delicious! Naturally, this guaranteed my return the following week. The residents and I had a wonderful 'Singalong' one morning where I sang a few arias and was joined in with the singing of some songs from the musicals. Another musical morning was during Succot, singing in the Succah with residents from the West Wing. I had some very enthusiastic partners in song and it was a truly heart-warming experience. It has been extremely rewarding talking with the residents at 'Tea & Talk' and hearing their interesting stories and thoughts. I always take away giant pearls of wisdom and a sense of warmth and love.

The members of staff have been very welcoming and helpful. Thank you, especially, to Barbara Bernstein and also to Lesley and Annie at 'Tea & Talk.' I am enjoying my time at this home away from home very much.

R50 000

We are entering a new era and its time for our coffee shop to be upgraded. We're making good progress to making funds available but we're not quite there yet. Help us get there!
